Alternate displays to LCD2004?

This isn't an issue, just a question.

I am looking to mount my NTP Pi in a 1RU case so I can place it in my rack. Unfortunately the 20x04 LCD is larder than 1RU and I have been unable to find one with smaller dimensions.

I have a few other displays on order to tinker with and to see if I can get working in an acceptable manner:

• 40x2 character LCD - Should be easy enough to re-arrange the output to fit two lines from the 2004 onto a single line on the 4002
• 128x64 matrix ~2.14inch LCD SPI - Will (just!) fit in 1RU, I'd need to re-work the code for the dot matrix display, but also could be used to display graphs relatively easily.
• 284x76 matrix 2.24 inch TFT SPI - Will fit easily with room to spare. Same as the 128x64 would need re-coding, but also has colour.

I don't need the size of the 20x4 as I nned it only as an indication, and the colour on the TFT would allow for issues to be displayed in different colours.

I am wondering if anyone has already gone down this path and would like to share their experiences.

The current driver was tested (long ago) with the different display variant 1602 (16 x 2 chars). That is just enough to display the full date/time and some basic satellite and precision information. To use that would basically require simply to remove stuff from the display printing code so that it fits with 16x2. Simply changing:

    lcd = LcdDisplay(sm_bus=1, i2c_addr=i2c_address_display, cols=20, rows=4, ada=adafruit_i2c_hardware, fast_lcd=lcd_latency_overdrive)

to cols=16, rows=2 should be enough to adapt the display for a HD44780 1602 LCD (with I2C board).

I have no experience with the 20x2 variant, and this one seems to use a different display controller, which almost certainly won't work without writing a new driver. Same for the matrix display boards which I've never used.

Hi Dominik,
The displays I ordered finally arrived, and today i got a chance to see what would work.
Physical size was really the limiting factor as I wanted to place it in a 1RU enclosure, so I went with a 2.25-inch TFT ST7789 76*284 SPI LCD module.
